Year 5 & 6 - Newton

Welcome to the Newton class page.  In these unprecedented times, this is the page where I will set you learning tasks and ideas to work on at home. Work will be set every school day.

Remember that any work you wish to share with me can be photographed on a tablet/smartphone and emailed to me at bhowarth@wylyevalley.wilts.sch.uk

Term 6 Week 7 (Week beginning Monday 13th July 2020) -

The final week of what has been an unusual school year

Well, the school year is drawing to a close. I hope that the Year 5 children in Newton have been keeping safe and well through their extended lockdown. You will all have received your school reports by now - act on any advice when you come back in September as Year 6 pupils. It will be your turn then to be the ambassadors and role models for the younger children in school. I'm looking forward to seeing you all again.

As this week is the final week, I'm going to put the whole week's English and Maths planning here at once rather than daily.  In school, it will be a busy and emotional week for Year 6 as they finalise their last week at primary school before moving on.

Tuesday, 2nd June 2020 - Home Learning

Well, we made it safely through the first day back without incident. There's a lot of different routines to get used to, but everyone was pleased to come back and see their friends after so long away.

Maths

Year 5 Week 6 Lesson 2 (Multiply mixed numbers by an integer) is here: https://vimeo.com/420244296 or https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

In school, Year 6 will do the Maths lesson that was set online for Monday as we didn't fit it into the schedule. I am sure that this may happen on occasion throughout the term. In this event, the Year 6 children at home may wish to complete the Year 5 work to compound their understanding further of work covered previously.

English

Year 5 - Week 6 Lesson 2 - Story: Reading Comprehension – Predictions https://www.thenational.academy/year-5/english/story-reading-comprehension-predicitons-year-5-wk6-2

As with the Maths, Year 6 did not complete Monday's English learning as we had a welcome back assembly and shared our lockdown experiences together instead.  This lesson will hopefully be taught in class today.

Year 6 Transition work

As the usual transition arrangements to the secondary schools are not happening this year, each day there will be a session to give the Year 6 children the opportunity to reflect on their time at primary school whilst also considering their hopes and anxieties about the future.

Session 2: At secondary school there will be a variety of different experiences. We will be interviewing a former pupil (using Microsoft Teams) about how they coped with some of the changes faced at secondary school.  What questions would you like to ask e.g. how did you make new friends? What did you do if you got lost? What did you do if you forgot your PE kit/forgot to do your homework?

PE

Year 6 will be doing exercise daily, including the Daily Run. At home you may wish to exercise with Joe Wicks https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ

In school, we will be using https://imoves.com/the-imovement - today we will again practise the Mountain Bike Experience as the Year 6s really enjoyed this workout. If you haven't seen the video clip of them doing it, Mr Barnes has shared it on the school Facebook page here:

After such a long time in lockdown, this will be the first day back for nearly all of the Year 6 children. Moving forward, on this class page there will be work set for Year 5 each day and also learning for Year 6 that will replicate closely what is being taught in class.

We will talk about coronavirus, lockdown and the future. Useful things that will be used are:

Key questions:

Who have you really missed?

What did you enjoy about lockdown?

What did you dislike about lockdown?

What did you do during the day?

How did you feel about coming back to school?

How much school work did you do?

Do you think this has changed you in any way? Explain your answer.

Do you have any questions?

Year 6 Transition work

As the usual transition arrangements to the secondary schools are not happening this year, each day there will be a session to give the Year 6 children the opportunity to reflect on their time at primary school whilst also considering their hopes and anxieties about the future.

Session 1: Starting secondary school is a time when children say farewell to current teachers and classmates and hello to many new faces. It is important to cherish favourite primary school memories. Children are to create a drawing of their special memory and frame it in a photo frame. They may choose to draw a favourite lesson, a funny moment with friends, a school trip, their favourite teacher or a job role they were proud of. They may choose to decorate the photo frame provided or to craft their own using card. Ideas here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQCVKVXSgTc

Is Graffiti Art or Vandalism?

Have a look at some of the street art in Bristol:  https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/street-art-upfest-banksy-graffiti-3216084

It has been brought to my attention that the White Rose resources are no longer free and require a subscription.  I have been in touch with White Rose to arrange a school subscription as I have been happy with the quality of the home learning resources. However, this may take a week to sort out as they require a cheque for payment (remember those?).

In the meantime, we will use the BBC Bitesize site for the Maths Home Learning until the subscription has been activated.  Here's today's Maths lessons.

You should have chosen one of the following and created a short cartoon based score that would tell the story. Continue working on this. Remember that you must be able to perform it on your own using only your voice/body sounds. Have a go at performing and recording it.

  • The scene in Goldilocks and The Three Bears where Goldilocks tests the beds/chairs/porridge.
  • The start of a school day
  • The end of an exciting football/rugby/tennis match
  • Lunchtime at school

Mrs Thornton would love to see your performance - send it her at

Well, today would have been the first day of SATs testing.  Year 6 would have started the day with the customary bacon/sausage/cheese sandwich and then taken the SPAG test (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) followed by the spelling test. The best part of the year being the Year 6 teacher is also having the bacon sandwiches during SATs week so I'll make sure that I make one to keep the tradition going!

Use the sheet below to draw a sequence of six similar sketches from your observation of movement. Once you have six sketches, one in each box, cut out the boxes and arrange them in order from the first pose to the last and staple along the lines. You should now have a flip book that creates the idea of movement when flicked through quickly.

Friday, 17th April 2020 - Home Learning Day 26

Thank you for the many emails that I received yesterday, it's good to hear lots of you are doing so well and adapting to the lockdown. We had our first staff meeting online yesterday which was interesting.

I understand that lots of you have unfinished projects from the range of learning ideas that I have included over the last few weeks, so I would suggest that you try and complete some of these.

When we do come back to school, hopefully before the summer, I think it would be a great idea to share some of this fantastic work that you've been doing at home.

If you haven't had enough screen time already, Harry recommends that you watch 'Bear Gryls -  You vs Wild', where the children have to make decisions about how he finishes different challenges. (It's on Netflix).

Message for Year 6 children going to Kingdown in September

One of the things that got cancelled when school closed was a visit to the Year 6 children from a Year 7 Kingdown pupil.  We knew that the Year 7 pupil chosen was going to be Eleanor, who only left us last September.

As she is unable to visit, she has kindly written a letter to the current Year 6 to let you know all of the things that she was going to tell you at the meeting.

Friday, 3rd April 2020 - Home Learning Day 12

Well this should have been the last day of term, looking forward to two weeks at home (or away somewhere).  However, the end of term came two weeks ago and we still have no idea when the next term will even start.

Over Easter, I will still post daily timetables as some of you have requested it. If it helps keep days structured for you and the children then it will be useful.

Anyway, what about today?

9:00 Exercise warm up with Joe Wicks, the Body Coach.

9:30 Times table work.

Times Table Rock Stars: Going into the final day, Year 6 boys have further increased their lead over the girls - super efforts from Espen and Oliver.  It looks all over unless the girls can at least treble their score on the last day.

The Year 5 challenge is much closer with the girls only having a small lead.  The Year 5 battle seems mainly to be Alex and Luca against Lizzie and Kathleen - come on the rest of Tear 5 on th efinal day.

9:30 Times table work.

Times Table Rock Stars: After Day 2, Year 6 boys have a large lead over the girls with Espen having scored more points than all the girls put together. With Year 5 it's much closer - only 7 points separates the boys lead over the girls. Pretty impressive as there's only two Year 5 boys playing at the moment. Three days still to go so it could all change.

Continue your diary writing if you can - continuing to write about what you've done at home, how you are feeling, what your hopes and fears may be, what questions you may have that you are uncertain about.

11:20 Music - As you usually have a Music lesson on a Wednesday, here's an idea for you:

Look through this powerpoint:

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t2-mu-139-the-history-of-music-musical-styles-through-the-20th-century-powerpoint

Choose some of the music styles to listen to on Youtube - let me know what music that you discover that you enjoy.

12:00 Lunchtime

1:00 Spellings - I haven't be giving weekly spellings out, but instead provided the National Curriculum spelling list for Year 5 and 6. Choose 5 or 10 of these each week and use the different techniques that you would use or your usual weekly spellings to work on them.

This list can be found at: https://www.paget.bham.sch.uk/pdfs/yeargroups/spellings-y56.pdf

I have also found a site that is free to use which has lots of fun spelling activities to help you remember words: https://www.sirlinkalot.org/

1:45 Topic work - Over the last few weeks, there have been lots of topic work tasks suggested.  Use this time to complete any that need still to be worked on.

2:30 Daily Run -  Find a space to get some exercise; run/walk for 10 minutes. Go outside and enjoy the fresh air (and hopefully sunshine). It's important to keep your body active as well as your brain.

Remember - if you would prefer to choose different writing ideas or different projects, this will be fine.  I've really enjoyed seeing the work that you've been doing (and it's good to keep in touch).  Email them to me at:

We have done work on several musical periods: medieval, renaissance, classical.
Can you research the life and music of one of the great composers from the next period, which is the Romantic period. Choose either Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Beethoven or Mahler.

Make a poster or a fact sheet or a PowerPoint. This is also for next week.
Hope you ok, Mrs Thornton x

12:00 Lunchtime

1:00 Spellings - Whilst I won't be giving weekly spellings out, I will give you the National Curriculum spelling list for Year 5 and 6. Choose 5 or 10 of these each week and use the different techniques that you would use or your usual weekly spellings to work on them.

1:45 History - In our lessons this term we have learned about 'The Space Race' between the USA and Russia (USSR). However, we didn't get to the best bit where the Americans landed on the moon in July 1969.  Research about the moon landing and write interesting facts, a description of events, a factfile. Be creative and make it as brilliant as you can.

11:00 English Diary Writing - The diary entries that I read today were very enjoyable. Who would have thought so many children missed school? Continue your diary writing for Day Two - write about what you've done at home, how you are feeling, what your hopes and fears may be, what questions you may have that you are uncertain about.

English Writing Topic - The writing I have seen today on different explorers has been of a very high quality and I have enjoyed reading them.

For your English lessons this week, I want you to continue on the theme of explorers. Research about their lives, their journeys, their achievements.  Spend time completing a factfile, powerpoint presentation or information poster.

Explorers that you may wish to consider are: Amelia Earhart, Marco Polo, Ernest Shackleton, Christopher Columbus, Charles Darwin, Gertrude Bell.  Or you may wish to choose someone different.

Just remember what I've said many times before - don't just copy everything from the internet, write what you find out in your own words.

12:00 Lunchtime

1:00 Design & Technology - Many in the class asked if they could use Minecraft to create a religious temple or building, so spend time planning and designing this.  For those children who do not have access to Minecraft, use Lego (or other toys) to create an interesting building. If you prefer, you can use pencils to draw an interesting building.

11:00 English Writing - Whilst these may seem uncertain times at the moment, I am sure in months to come when life returns to normal, we will look back on what we did and the different emotions that we felt.  I am suggesting that you keep a diary where you write about what you have done at home, how you are feeling, what your hopes and fears may be, what questions you may have that you are uncertain about.  It's your diary so write about things important to you during these upcoming days and weeks.  One thing is for sure, these events will seem incredible to your own family in the future so try and keep a record of them.

English Writing Topic - Many in the class were interested in different explorers. So for your English lessons this week, I want you to choose an explorer that you would like to find out more about.
