Meet the Governors

What do we do?

At Wylye Valley School we have a governing body who meet as a Full Governing Board (FGB) each month apart from summer and Easter. We come from different backgrounds and include parents, grandparents, teachers and members of the local church community. We work in partnership with the Headteacher in the leadership of the school.

We set the vision, values and strategic direction for the school, and ensure that all the policies and procedures that guide the school are up to date and relevant. The daily operational management of the school is the responsibility of the Headteacher.

As a church school, our Foundation Governors ensure that the school is meeting the expectations of SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) and our Christian values underpin all that we do.

The purpose of the governing body is to help the school provide the best possible education for our pupils and we achieve this by monitoring progress throughout the school, reviewing the policies, making recommendations to the school’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and holding the Headteacher to account for the day to day running of the school. We also have a responsibility to ensure the voices of stakeholders are heard.

We have three sub-groups which are:

  • Resources group who monitor the school finances, upkeep of the premises and equipment
  • Teaching & Learning group who monitor pupil progress and attendance
  • Strategic Leadership Group (SLG) who work with the SLG to set the School Development Plan

We are there to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the school and understand any challenges staff and pupils may be facing.  We try to strike an appropriate balance between support and challenge by provide support and encouragement and also acting as a ‘critical friend’.

We must be prepared to account for the school’s overall performance and explain its decisions and actions to anyone who has a legitimate interest e.g. Ofsted, the Diocese, the Local Authority.

If you would like to know more about our role as governors in the running of the school, please let us know.
